  • ½  cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 cups sliced onion
  • 5 cups beef broth
  • 1 pinch salt and butter to taste
  • 2 tablespoon dry sherry
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 4 slice french bread
  • 4 slices provolone cheese 
  • 2 slices chopped swiss cheese
  • ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese

Instructions for French Onion Soup Recipe

Step 1

First of all, melt the butter with olive oil in a stock pot over medium flame.Add onions and continuously stir them until the onion is tender,but not brown.

Step 2

Now add beef broth,thyme and sherry.Add salt and pepper and allow them to boil for 30 minutes.

Step 3

During this, preheat the oven.

Step 4

Ladle the soup in the bowls and put in the oven,and place 1 slice of  bread on every bowl.Layer each bread with ½  chopped swiss cheese,a slice of provolone,and 1 tablespoon parmesan cheese.
